Dr. Shilpa H. Amin is a program official in the Division of Clinical and Health Services Research at NIMHD. She supports the extramural research program involving epidemiologic studies and clinical trials in health care quality, patient safety, care coordination, health communications, and health care service delivery.

Dr. Amin’s clinical focus areas are women’s health, preventive care, care coordination, and medical issues across the lifespan, with an interest in Asian-American populations of Indian origin.

More specifically, she is interested in care coordination (principles of patient safety, risk management, and quality assurance interventions), sex as a biological variable, gender-based medicine and sex differences, the intersection of menopause and multiple chronic conditions, culturally competent palliative care in aging populations, cardiovascular disease, and innovative models of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA)-focused care (and its diffusion into health care).

Trained in integrative care, Dr. Amin seeks new ways to integrate integrative and complementary medicine interventions to support women’s resiliency and quality of life.

Prior to joining NIMHD, Dr. Amin has held a range of clinical, administrative leadership, and advisory work experiences and roles in various settings, including private family medicine practice, virtual primary care/telemedicine, rural retail health, urgent care, long-term care/hospice, sub-acute rehabilitation, assisted living, home care, community and school health, integrated health systems, and payor organizations. She has worked as a research physician for the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health and as a medical officer for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Effective Health Care Program for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ). She has served on grant peer-review panels for the Patient-Centered Outcome Research Institute.

At The George Washington University (GW), Dr. Amin earned her bachelor’s degree in biology with dual minors in sociology and religion and her medical doctorate from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She completed a family medicine residency at GW Holy Cross Hospital Health Center, followed by a geriatrics fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center - St. Margaret. At the Mayo Clinic, she earned a master’s degree in biomedical sciences, focusing on clinical research, and completed the Women’s Health Fellowship. She completed a certification in integrative medicine at the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine.

More recently, Dr. Amin completed a Master of Jurisprudence degree with certification in health care compliance at Loyola University. She is dual board-certified in family medicine and geriatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

In 2023, Dr. Amin received the NIH Director’s Award for her work promoting DEIA; in 2022, she received an NIH NHLBI Director’s award for her contributions to the NHLBI Sex/Gender-Specific COVID-19 Outcomes and Management workshop; in 2012, she received the AHRQ Director’s Award for Excellence in Evidence-Based Practice.
