NIMHD Names New Scientific Director

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) announced the appointment of Kelvin Choi, Ph.D., M.P.H., as the new scientific director of its Division of Intramural Research (DIR), effective November 17, 2024. Dr. Choi has served as acting scientific director since March 2023, following the retirement of former scientific director, Anna M. Nápoles, Ph.D.

A new online resource, designed to provide easy access to interventions that improve minority health and reduce health disparities, was recently unveiled by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD).

NIMHD Welcomes Harvard Commonwealth Fund Fellows

In person for the first time since 2019, fellows participate in site visits to experience the policymaking processes in public health management first-hand. NIMHD Director Dr. Eliseo Pérez-Stable, with NIMHD scientific, legislative and communications staff discussed the institute’s initiatives to advance the science of minority health and health disparities and promote workforce diversity.

RESPOND Study Team Perseveres to Recruit Largest Cohort of African American Men for Prostate Cancer Research

During the COVID-19 pandemic and at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, researchers assembled a recruitment dream team and joined with African American men who are prostate cancer survivors to “do what is needed for future generations.”

African American men have disproportionately higher prostate cancer rates, with an earlier onset, and twice the prostate cancer mortality than other racial groups. These outcomes are difficult for University of Southern California (USC) researchers to accept.
