Dr. Sagar Dugani is an associate professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic and an academic hospitalist dedicated to reducing health disparities associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its complications, including premature heart disease and stroke. He serves as a consultant in the Division of Hospital Internal Medicine, research chair for the Division of Hospital Internal Medicine, associate vice-chair of research in the Department of Medicine, and consultant in Health Care Delivery Research in Mayo Clinic’s Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery. In 2024, he became associate director of the Community-Engaged Research Program in Mayo Clinic’s Center for Clinical and Translational Science.
Dr. Dugani’s NIMHD K23 award, “Rural Patient Risks and Exposures for Diabetes ConTrol (Rural PREDICT),” focuses on the higher burden of T2D among rural populations in the Midwest. His research examines how ethnicity, rural residence, lifestyle, and socioeconomic status influence T2D incidence, trends, and complications. This work supports the development of personalized interventions to reduce T2D risk.
Dr. Dugani also uses large data analytic approaches to improve hospital care and design and evaluate interventions to reduce in-hospital mortality, especially mortality associated with T2D. His research on hospital practice and care is expected to inform guidelines for better coordinated, individualized care for hospitalized patients.
In addition to his research, Dr. Dugani serves on multiple editorial boards and was selected for the National Rural Health Association Rural Health Fellows Program.
