NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series – August 2013

The National Institutes of Health welcomes Dr. Peter Milgrom as the speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on August 15, 2013.

While there has been significant improvement in the oral health of Americans, oral conditions and diseases are still common among certain segments of the U.S. population particularly children, low-income, and racial and ethnic minority populations. People with disabilities, lower levels of education, and some chronic health conditions are also more likely to have poor oral health. Lack of access to dental care across the ages and an increase in tooth decay in preschool-aged children are of major concern. The Healthy People 2020 report outlines key objectives for the nation to improve oral health conditions, and it underscores the need for increased research to understand the factors contributing to oral health diseases and interventions to prevent and control these diseases, especially among children. In his presentation, Dr. Peter Milgrom will discuss oral health disparities, the approach presented by the Affordable Care Act to address these disparities, and the translational community-based research being undertaken at the Northwest Center to Reduce Oral Health Disparities.
