NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series – April 2012

In honor of National Minority Health Month, the National Institutes of Health is pleased to host representatives from other Federal agencies for a special presentation on the compounding non-biological factors that affect health and health disparities. This speakers’ forum will take place on April 19, 2012 as part of the NIH Minority Health Promotion Day.

According to the World Health Organization, "the social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels. The social determinants of health are mostly responsible for health inequities - the unfair and avoidable differences in health status."

This session will explore the role of factors such as housing circumstances, environmental influences, transportation, poverty, and social justice in health disparities. It will also highlight work taking place nationally and globally by Federal agencies to address the social determinants of health in an effort to improve the health of minority and other underserved populations.
