Why NIMHD Supports the Precision Medicine Initiative® (PMI) Cohort Program

As one of 27 Institutes and Centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), strives to improve minority health and eliminate health disparities through scientific research, training, collaborations and outreach. Pivotal to advancing our mission is the inclusion of diverse populations in biomedical research.

What is the NIH Precision Medicine Initiative® Cohort Program?

The PMI Cohort Program is a landmark longitudinal research effort that aims to engage 1 million or more U.S. participants to improve our ability to prevent and treat disease based on individual differences in lifestyle, environment and genetics.

Why is diversity important in the PMI Cohort Program?

Diversity is important for ensuring that the benefits of precision medicine, improved diagnosis, treatment and prevention, are available to everyone, including people who are medically underserved and/or historically underrepresented in biomedical research or who, because of systematic social disadvantage, experience disparities in health.
