NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series – November 2013

In commemoration of National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, the National Institutes of Health welcomes Dr. Linda Burhansstipanov as the featured speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on November 21, 2013.

There are 3.4 million American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs), representing 566 federally-recognized tribes in the U.S. They experience health disparities particularly in heart disease, cancer, diabetes, alcoholism and unintentional injuries. AI/ANs also face multiple challenges in accessing health care, including lack of financial resources, transportation and remoteness of communities.

In her presentation, Dr. Linda Burhansstipanov will provide a brief overview of health equity versus equality and discuss her research on cancer in American Indian and Alaska Native communities, including the Native Navigators and the Cancer Continuum (NNACC) study and intervention.
