NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series – November 2013
In commemoration of National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, the National Institutes of Health welcomes Dr. Linda Burhansstipanov as the featured speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on November 21, 2013.
There are 3.4 million American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs), representing 566 federally-recognized tribes in the U.S. They experience health disparities particularly in heart disease, cancer, diabetes, alcoholism and unintentional injuries. AI/ANs also face multiple challenges in accessing health care, including lack of financial resources, transportation and remoteness of communities.
In her presentation, Dr. Linda Burhansstipanov will provide a brief overview of health equity versus equality and discuss her research on cancer in American Indian and Alaska Native communities, including the Native Navigators and the Cancer Continuum (NNACC) study and intervention. Dr. Linda Burhansstipanov (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) has worked in public health since 1971, primarily with Native American issues. She is a nationally recognized educator on cancer prevention, community-based participatory research, navigation programs, cultural competency, evaluation and other topics. She taught full-time at California State University Long Beach for 18 years and part-time for the University of California, Los Angeles for five years. She developed and implemented the Native American Cancer Research Program at the National Cancer Institute from 1989-1993. Dr. Burhansstipanov worked with the AMC Cancer Research Center in Denver for five years before founding Native American Cancer Initiatives, Incorporated, and the Native American Cancer Research Corporation. She serves on multiple federal advisory boards for NIH and CDC. She currently is the principal investigator and subcontractor for more than five NIH grants. Dr. Burhansstipanov has over 125 peer-reviewed publications, of which most address Native American cancer, public health, genetic education, inequities and data issues.
