NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series – May 2013

In commemoration of Asian American Heritage Month, the National Institutes of Health is pleased to welcome Dr. Chau Trinh-Shevrin, as the featured speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar Series on May 16, 2013.

Asian Americans currently comprise 5.6% of the population and are the fastest growing minority population in the United States. By 2050, it is estimated that the Asian American population will double in size, increasing to 43.2 million Asian Americans and representing 10% of the US population. There are profound differences across Asian ethnic groups with respect to immigrant status, migration histories, access to resources, language access, and socioeconomic status.

A large segment of Asian Americans face linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic barriers to health care. Health disparities are particularly evident when looking at differences across racial and ethnic groups and within Asian American subgroups. While some national milestones have been made in addressing the disparities in health facing Asian American populations, there remain several challenges in eliminating these disparities.

In her presentation, Dr. Trinh-Shevrin will examine Asian American health disparities, challenges related to health access and health equity, and the progress that has been made to reduce health disparities in Asian American populations. She will highlight some of the research being done to focus on issues such as social determinants of health; efforts to dispel the model minority myth; community empowerment and capacity building; and collection of disaggregated health data on Asian Americans and other racial and ethnic minority populations.
